In a candid and reflective moment, WWE Hall of Famer Booker T recently revisited a past incident where his attempt to offer constructive criticism towards Naomi, a fellow wrestler, sparked a backlash from certain sections of the online community. Recounting the episode during an interview on Busted Open, Booker T opened up about the backlash he faced after making remarks about Naomi’s in-ring skills, shedding light on the complexities of offering feedback in the wrestling industry.
Reflecting on the incident, Booker T revealed that several years ago, he had remarked that Naomi possessed exceptional athleticism but had areas to improve upon in her wrestling repertoire. However, rather than being received as constructive feedback, Booker’s remarks drew ire from certain quarters of what he referred to as “Black Twitter,” highlighting the sensitive nature of discussing performance critiques in a public forum.
“I said, ‘Man, Naomi’s the best athlete in the locker room. I mean, she’s got more athletic skills than everybody in the locker room.’ I said, ‘But there’s a couple of things missing that she gotta work on.’ And that was five years ago or something like that, and Black Twitter came after me so bad because I was trying to help her. And I go, ‘Wow, they don’t even get it.’ I’m not gonna say what those things are. Maybe I want her to call and we can talk about it,” Booker T recounted, his words tinged with a sense of frustration and disappointment at the misunderstanding.
Despite the backlash, Naomi has continued to carve her path in WWE, recently making a triumphant return to the ring after an absence of nearly two years. Set to compete in the Women’s Elimination Chamber match alongside some of WWE’s top female talents, including Becky Lynch, Bianca Belair, and Liv Morgan, Naomi finds herself on the cusp of championship contention at WrestleMania XL.
Offering his perspective on the matter, WWE Hall of Famer Mark Henry weighed in on Booker T’s comments, emphasizing Naomi’s understanding of the nuances of the industry and the multifaceted nature of success in professional wrestling.
“But you wouldn’t have no problem with Naomi, Book, because she understands that in our industry it takes more than athleticism. She understands that it takes more than personality. Think about all the people that we’ve known in our lives that have so much personality. I mean, man, overflowing, and they still had success. If they would have been athletes, oh my God,” Henry remarked, his words echoing a sentiment of resilience and determination.
As fans gear up for the Women’s Elimination Chamber match, speculation runs rampant about who will emerge victorious and earn a coveted shot at the Women’s World Championship at WrestleMania XL. In the midst of the excitement, Booker T’s and Mark Henry’s reflections serve as a poignant reminder of the intricacies and challenges inherent in the world of professional wrestling.
