Two adolescent girls lost their life in a tragic incident that occurred on Tuesday afternoon when their jet ski and a boat collided at a high speed on Antioch, Illinois’ peaceful Lake Marie.
According to the Lake County Sheriff’s Office, the victims—13-year-old Elle Kim from Long Grove, Illinois, and 16-year-old Sarina Vootkur of Lake Forest, California—were having a great time on a summer vacation when the tragic event happened.
According to information that the authorities are releasing, Elle Kim was riding along on a Yamaha jet ski driven by Sarina Vootkur. At the time of the incident, they were traveling northward close to the Grass Lake channel.
“It’s a heartbreaking incident,” Sheriff John Idleburg said, emphasizing the psychological impact on the families and the community.
As soon as there were reports of the incident, emergency personnel were sent to the area. Both girls died at the site from their injuries, even though there were quick attempts to resuscitate them.
The Lake County Sheriff’s Office and the Illinois Conservation Police are conducting a thorough investigation as a result of the tragedy. The sequence of events leading up to the incident, including elements like speed and visibility on the lake, is being pieced together by authorities.
“This investigation aims to provide answers to the families and to understand how this unfortunate accident occurred,” Sheriff Idleburg stated during a press briefing.
As news of the incident spreads, residents and visitors to Lake Marie have expressed shock and sorrow over the loss of young lives in what was meant to be a day of summer fun.

“It’s devastating to hear something like this happening so close to home,” remarked a local resident who frequents the lake. “My heart goes out to their families. It’s just heartbreaking.”
The tragedy is a sobering reminder of the significance of taking precautions around water, particularly in the busy summer months when lakes and rivers experience a spike in recreational activity. Authorities strongly advise boaters and jet skiers to follow all safety guidelines, which include going at a reasonable speed and keeping a close eye out for other vessels.
Sheriff Idleburg added, “We cannot stress enough the need for caution and awareness on the water.” “Tragedies like this remind us all of the fragility of life.”
Meanwhile, friends and classmates of Sarina and Elle have begun to mourn their untimely deaths, remembering them for their vibrant personalities and promising futures.
“They were both such sweet girls,” a classmate of Sarina reflected tearfully. “It’s hard to believe they’re gone. They had so much ahead of them.”
Counseling services have been made available to students and families affected by the loss, as the community rallies in support of grieving loved ones.
The goal of gaining a deeper comprehension of the events leading up to this terrible catastrophe on Lake Marie is being pursued while paying tribute to Sarina Vootkur and Elle Kim’s memory as the collision’s causes are still being investigated.
“Our thoughts are with the families and friends of Sarina and Elle during this incredibly difficult time,” said Sheriff Idleburg. “We are committed to uncovering the truth and providing closure to all those affected by this heartbreaking loss.”
The investigation into the fatal collision is ongoing, with updates expected as more information becomes available.
