GRAND ISLAND, Neb. — A routine stop at an Interstate 80 rest area in eastern Nebraska turned into a nightmare for Gary and Mary Weaver, both in their 70s, as they fell victim to a brutal knife attack on Wednesday morning. The incident, described by authorities as an attempted robbery gone awry, has left Mr. Weaver dead and Mrs. Weaver fighting for her life with critical injuries.
According to the Hall County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to the scene shortly after 7 a.m., finding both victims with severe knife wounds. The couple, originally from Eureka, Missouri, had been traveling across Nebraska in their mobile home when tragedy struck.
Gary Weaver, 72, succumbed to his injuries after being transported to a hospital in Grand Island. His wife, Mary Weaver, 71, remains hospitalized in critical condition, battling life-threatening injuries that have shaken their family and community.
Authorities quickly mobilized in pursuit of the suspect, who fled the rest area in a vehicle before law enforcement arrived. After a tense search operation involving state troopers and a police dog, authorities apprehended 22-year-old James Thompson Jr. of Elyria, Ohio, approximately 30 minutes later. Thompson now faces a litany of charges, including first-degree murder, attempted murder, robbery, and fleeing from police.
As of Wednesday, Thompson remains in custody at the Hall County Jail without legal representation, awaiting his initial court appearance.
