Drama, both inside and outside the ring, is nothing new to fans of professional wrestling. However, the wrestling world was shocked when legendary wrestler Raven revealed the true reasons for his departures from WCW and WWE. Raven is well-known for his eerie, menacing demeanor and gripping narratives. His rise to professional wrestling fame was filled with twists and turns.
He was Johnny Polo in the WWE and Scotty Flamingo in the WCW until he changed into the legendary persona Raven. Prior to his big success in ECW, where he rose to fame in the wrestling community, he was a member of WCW and WWE. However, his stints in WCW and WWE were short-lived and surrounded by controversy.
Raven, actual name Scott Levy, opened up about what happened after he left these two big promotions in an honest discussion on a well-known wrestling podcast. As he lifted the curtain on his tumultuous wrestling career, fans were enthralled.

As Scotty Flamingo, a flamboyant, brazen character who contrasted sharply with the darker persona he would eventually assume, Raven had his first big break in WCW. When he joined WCW in 1992, he gained notoriety right away. But by 1993, he was no longer with them, confusing his followers.
Raven claims the main reason he left WCW was because of creative issues. He clarified, “They didn’t know what to do with me.” “I wanted to develop as a person, but others in positions of authority didn’t share my vision. I knew I had more to give than what they were letting me demonstrate, which was disappointing.”
Another important factor was the notoriously shady backstage politics of WCW at the time. “Power battles and inflated egos abounded. It wasn’t the ideal setting for someone attempting to establish themselves and innovate simultaneously, according to Raven.
Raven’s next step was to join the WWE, where he took on a new persona as the conceited, preppy manager Johnny Polo. The character’s tenure in WWE was brief—it ended in late 1994—despite his potential. Raven mentioned two main reasons for leaving: a lack of creative direction and personal issues.

“I felt like Johnny Polo in a nutshell. Though the character had its moments, Raven stated that it wasn’t who she wanted to be. “I had disagreements with a few of the company’s important leaders. There were moments when I thought my opinions were being disregarded or neglected completely. That was so depressing.
Raven also talked on how hard the WWE schedule was on him and how it affected his mental health. “Being a young person under a lot of stress, I didn’t have the best coping skills. Burnout was certain to ensue.”
Giving up on WWE proved to be a godsend in the end. In 1995, Raven joined ECW, where he was given the creative freedom to develop the Raven character—a dark, tortured soul with a penchant for mind games and psychological warfare. This was the turning point of his career, allowing him to fully showcase his talents and connect with fans on a deeper level.
“ECW was my true self-discovery. Paul Heyman trusted me enough to let me explore my thoughts. It was a place where I could flourish creatively and the fans were amazing,” Raven thought.
Raven’s disclosures throw light on the inner workings of the wrestling business and the difficulties that wrestlers encounter. Because of his inventiveness and tenacity, Raven overcame his failures in both WCW and WWE to establish himself as one of the sport’s most enduring figures.
As fans digest these new insights, Raven’s story serves as a reminder of the perseverance required to succeed in the wrestling world. His journey from Scotty Flamingo to Raven is a testament to his enduring impact on the industry and his ability to adapt and reinvent himself, no matter the odds.
